Ramblings of an animator

Acting for Animation

Posted by on Dec 7, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

It’s been a while since I posted something. I’ve been rather busy with my journey. I have officially (as of my last review on Sunday) finished my last workshop of ianimate.net
and have learned so much. It has been great to see my shots and how much I’ve grown over the last 1 1/2 years. I can’t wait to continue to press on to be the best, I am now devoting myself to acting, and gesture drawing to help myself grow and become a better animator, which leads me to this post :) . I have watched Uta Hagen’s acting class which I purchased at the beginning of this workshop and learned a ton. I need to now sit and take notes and dive deeper (along with a hopeful Christmas present of her books). But I write this post to share something I was shared to by a fellow ianimate student. Check out this guy’s blog post, Josh’s Blog (http://joshb-log.blogspot.com/2011/01/acting-and-animation.html). He gives some great thoughts on acting and also some reviews on some great acting DVD’s and books. Hope you all enjoy and happy animating!

Disney Pixar Brave Teaser Trailer

Posted by on Jun 27, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

Ok so here is my little rant to go along with this amazing Teaser. I think I’m getting away from being a Pixar fanboy, not because I’m hanging out with all these Dreamworks animators at inAimate :) , haha! But what I do want to say is Cars 2 is getting hammered by the Pixar fanboys and animators out there, but look at box office sales and merchandise sales and they will show different. Pixar is a company that wants to make money, and they did it right by making Cars 2. I haven’t seen it yet, won’t be seeing it in theaters, but Cars 1 was an entertaining movie. I thought it was cute and funny, nothing special but was good enough to watch and have fun. I think Cars 2 will do the same for me, but I don’t think it was made for me, it was made for boys and girls of a younger age! look at any young kid sporting there Lightning McQueen shoes, shorts, t-shirts, model cars, bicycles, you name it they have it. But one thing I’m excited about watching this trailer of Brave is that it looks totally different from a Pixar flick, which to me right now is a great thing. They needed to get outside of their bubble of sequels and make a intense story driven movie like this. I can’t wait to see more from these trailers in the future, but for now here it is if you haven’t seen it yet! Enjoy and happying animating.

Acetate!

Posted by on Jun 20, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

Ok so I’m not huge on reviewing things, but as an animator who is constantly trying to use new tools to help speed up and make my animation better I had to give news to you Mac OSX users. I have started using it as of last week because I finally updated to snow leopard, in wait of Lion coming out. So I have used other tools that made it so difficult to go back and fourth between maya and the tool or reference and the tool that I just found myself not using it that often. Well after finding this one and seeing that it came from an animator I had to try it out and boy was I happy. I love that fact that you can make the tool full screen partial screen or any shape you want. This has made it a breeze with maya or quicktime because I can put the draw over space right over where I need it to be and can click on both maya window and the acetate window to mark up. I love the dot tool and being able to follow my arcs and making them whatever color size anything I want. It has been a little buggie but nothing too bad although I hope it gets fixed and I will continue to leave feedback and email the developer… I paid for it so I can now :) . This software is free but I hope that people start donating to help make the software better! I wanted to try it out before donating but that wait was quickly figured out after playing with this awesome software and I hope you all (Well those Mac OSX users out there) get in and use it and give feedback to make this tool and workflow better for us animators. Check out the links below. I also saw a post of a future Windows software in the works, so hopefully that happens.

Ken Fountain Shot Walkthrough!

Posted by on Jun 18, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

Hey again fellow animation enthusiast! I have amazing news that Dreamworks animator and iAnimator instructor Ken Fountain has put together a shot walkthrough of a dialog shot and will be coming out soon, how soon you may ask… I have no clue but I hope its really soon! From the looks of the teaser trailer this shot walkthrough will be super in-depth and need for every animator out their! Ken Fountain is one of my favorite instructors to watch with his vast knowledge in acting and performance. He does a great job of explaining all in detail what he is feeling and what the audience is seeing and should be seeing and tries to get you to think as an actor and not just an animator moving these rigs! I’ll keep you all posted when it will be ready for download, and in the mean time don’t forget to purchase Jamaal Bradley’s and also Mike Walling’s shot walkthrough and overlapping action videos, which I haven’t posted on yet… I’ll get to that in the next post :) . Happy animating

Animation Conversation

Posted by on Jun 17, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

A fellow iAnimate (Chris Figat) gave me a link today called Animation Conversation. I haven’t listened to any but the people pictured makes me want to listen and post this blog about it! I love listening to some great podcasts while animating… it just sucks it seems to be so difficult to put them together! Speaking of Animation has done an awesome job but again as a listener I want one every day, haha. So I guess the more people doing it the better! If I come across some good ones on the link I will try and get the posted here in my blog to make it easier on you all. Hope you guys enjoy, happy animating!

Dailymation

Alright so I have this guy’s bloged (Yoni Goodman) linked on my animation links. It amazes me what this guy does at Dailymation, not because its the most amazing animation ever… but that he is taking it back to the fun creative animation that he fell in love with. I don’t know about you all out their but I can remember the countless animations i did with a pencil, notepad, sticky pads and stick figure, It makes me smile with all I fell in love with and laughed at and enjoyed at an early age. These couple videos is only a fraction of the many videos he has done on his site, so go check them out and have fun enjoying simple animation. Happy animating

Star Wars

I’m a huge fan of the old star wars movies, not so much the new ones. But I love video games especially cinematics that just make you want to be a Jedi and place this game. The ones that I’ve seen have all done this so well. I don’t now if this one was done by Blur Studios like the others I have seen, but none the least it is so fun to watch. Congrats to the team that worked on this! Thanks for making the kid in me want to be a Jedi again :) .

And I’m back!

Posted by on Jun 9, 2011 in Animation | 0 comments

After a long debate about sticking with Apple’s iWeb after MobileMe will be gone do to iCloud… I have switched over to a WordPress Blog style site. I am looking forward to this new step in my animation and blogging life. I want to start doing some blogging not just for others to read (because this will probably never get read :) ) but because I want to be able to look back at this for myself. I have been putting a lot of work into my animation and feel like I’m making a big step in my learning. iAnimate has be the most amazing experience and I’m so thankful for what is happening here. All of the instructors and I mean all of them are so completely amazing. They all have such passion for teaching, love for their students learning and more importantly they are just fun people to talk with and laugh with. Each Q&A and Review whether from my instructor or other instructors are filled with such amazing knowledge! So my plan with this new blog is to keep it updated… I know I know, I’ve said it many times but this time I mean it. I’m in the middle of my second to last workshop and now its time to put everything I have into it. Of course I will not be uploading my work on here but I will be hopefully adding some drawings (I’m not good so don’t laugh), maybe some test shots, plannings, and whatever else animated type awesomeness I come across from some amazing animators. Until next time, happy animating.
